Loved this book. Wish I could find more like it.

I am an avid reader of gay fiction and I enjoyed this book because it was different from others that I have read. Firelands is a quick read with lots of plot twists - some more believable than others. Just how often can one person be stabbed, frozen, assaulted, etc. and still survive? So if you are looking for a good book to cuddle up with, read one. But if you are looking for something in any way challenging, leave this one on the shelves.

Wonderfully written book, a great followup to Frontiers, and it was nice to find out how John Chapman eventually made his way to Ohio. Wish Jensen would write more historical novels, well-researched, well-crafted, literate, gay-themed novels are hard to come by.

This is an interesting read.Recommend it to others.

The story of a man who goes west towards the territories so he can start over is plausible, however, the fact he never knew he was gay, isn't. Personally, I couldn't get into this book because it lacked imagination, detail, and characterization. I never really empathized with any of the characters; each of them were two dimensional. Either they were good or they were evil, no middle ground. The fact this book uses mysticism is a shallow ploy to cover poor writing skills. Aside from good grammatical editing, this story had no redeeming value.

i can not wait for his third

Okay, so maybe Michael Jensen writes like James Fenimore Cooper on Ecstasy. Is that such a bad thing? After all, he's a man on a mission. Gay people used to be invisible, at least if American folktales are any indication. Jensen's FIRELANDS seems hell-bent on reclaiming Western myths for the unrepresented. (Think `Deadwood' meets `Queer as Folk.') It begins with explosive action, which never really lets up. As a brutal winter tightens its grip on the Ohio Territory in 1797, supplies grow scarce. With tensions running high between settlers and indigenous peoples, only a fool or a hero would be traveling this wilderness. "No one knows me well," muses Cole Seavey, "and that's the way I like it." Virtually at once, this two-fisted frontiersman finds himself in deadly danger. In the space of a few pages, he has a fistfight with a cougar, uncovers a murder, and barely evades the clutches of a "monster from the bowels of hell." That's right. A monster. So Firelands is not just a Gay Western. It's a Gay Horror Western.Cool.During a peril-fraught voyage of self-discovery, Cole rescues fair maids, braves fierce storms, falls for a fierce brave and befriends Johnny Appleseed and his boyfriend. (No, really.) Venturing from frozen wastelands to underground ruins, the plot, composed almost entirely of climaxes of one sort or another, proves wildly implausible. But isn't that how legends work?

Cole Seavey is a frontiersman traveling through Ohio during the winter of 1799. During a fierce storm, he happens upon a terrified and severly injured young girl, lost in the woods, but is attacked by some kind of creature before he can save the girl. A handsome young Delaware brave named Pakim stumbles across the terribly wounded Cole and takes him to a cabin near the town of Hugh's Lick. Days later, he awakens, trying to piece together what happened with that strange creature as well as trying to understand his strange feelings for Pakim, believing them to be caused by his high fever. Soon, townsfolk began disappearing; animals are slaughtered; tales of an Indian demon -- a wendigo -- begin to work their way through Hugh's Lick. Cole and Pakim set out to put an end to this demon before more deaths occur.A very interesting historical novel that interweaves two good stories: the mystery surrounding the wendigo and the coming out of Cole Seavey as he begins to understand his feelings for Pakim. Being a fan of horror novels, author Michael Jensen handled the wendigo aspect of the story with much tension, gore and suspense to satisfy me. Eerie forests, thick fogs, and the fear of the unkown and unseen are used well by Jensen to heighten the creepy feel of the book. He also handles the homosexual aspect of the book equally well, showing Cole trying to come to terms with his new feelings for Pakim which shows him insight into his own past, and also portraying how 18th Century America felt toward what they considered a deviant lifestyle, with the characters of John Chapman -- who later became the American folk legend Jonnhy Appleseed -- and his partner, Palmer, who are forced to live on the outskirts of Hugh's Lick.I found this book hard to put down and finished it in one sitting. Guess you could say that I liked it.
