Review

“Engaging and interesting. . . . entirely winning.” (Jonathan Yardley Washington Post)“True to her subtitle, Ms. Ronstadt delivers a life story stitched to the sails of her eclectic musical voyaging. . . . She has found another way to tell a story: through this winning and informative book, in which her intelligence, passion, humor and commitment shine forth from every page.” (Tom Nolan Wall Street Journal)“For anyone fascinated by the cross-pollination of musical talent in Los Angeles' buzzing pre-corporate rock scene, Ronstadt's front-row seat offers a prime view. . . . While this bird can no longer sing, on the page she can still fly.” (USA Today)"Ronstadt revisits, with a mixture of fine-grained insight and personal modesty, one of the most remarkable and wide-ranging singing careers in the last century of American popular music." (San Francisco Chronicle)"Musical memories galore." (Boston Globe)“A personable and engagingly written memoir… consistently interesting.” (Kirkus)“A well-written glimpse into musical history as it was being made by Ronstadt and her peers.” (Publishers Weekly)

Wow.I'm a huge fan, and caught her in Los Angeles during the early years. But this is truthfully a disappointing book. Yes, it says musical memoir, but it is SOOOO impersonal!I wasn't looking for anything salacious or a too lurid. But she barley mentions some of the amazing folks around her during those times.A cast off line here about Jerry Brown, and just musical information about Glen, Don, and J.D..Then out of the blue, she mentions her son listening to Metallica!!!What? Linda had a son? When? Turns out she adopted a daughter as well! She shares so little in this book, it is like she is writing about someone else.If you are going to share Linda, share like we are your friends. You are wealthy because of us, don't cheat us on the real experiences you went through.I almost learned more from your Wikipedia page.If you aren't comfortable sharing, fine, then don't write a book.We would understand that better than feeling short changed.

The title is apt. It is not an ordinary memoir with lots of personal detail, but rather a "Musical Memoir" that tells us in good detail about her development as an artist and how she met and interacted with all the greats that she played with on her albums. She gives credit where credit is due and the list of artists she played with is a virtual Who's Who of the artists of this great rock and roll era. She is also largely responsible for the success of a lot of famous artists of the period, not least, the Eagles. I like the strength that she shows in defying the naysayers who disagreed with her decisions to sing Gilbert and Sullivan, opera, standards and Mexican standards. She did this at a time when she was queen of the rock and roll world when she wanted to expand her own ability to express her musical talents. She had mixed success in these attempts but most of these attempts broke new ground, and were wildly successful. I love artists who are not afraid to try new things and who grow throughout their career. Linda was this kind of artist.

I was expecting more of an autobiography but the title does say "A Musical Memoir" and that is what is was - what she did when, who she met, recorded with - Interesting but very impersonal. I was hoping to get more of a sense of her personally. I love reading about peoples personal journeys and want to know all about someone I admire and connect with (through music for example). When barely mentioning boyfriends (2) she would refer to them as "keeping company with." She mentioned children in the book but I had to Google her to read that they were adopted which is wonderful so why not say a few words about that experience? There also was no mention of her illness . She could have been an inspiration to us by adding a few of her personal struggles but that was her choice not to. I found the book very dry and very boring for the most part.

This is a beautiful memoir of Linda's life. In many ways, it is not written as an autobiography, but more as a musical journey. I fell in love with the soul of Ms. Ronstadt and her musical influences, from her grandparents, her aunt and the Spanish, classical and country influences she has absorbed. This is not a "tell-all" autobiography. She tells of the warm friendships that she has had throughout her life. She is truly a woman who loves life and everyone around her. I have read many musical autobiographies. My favorites are Brian Wilson's, John Fogerty's, Robbie Robertson's and this one by Linda Ronstadt. It is a wonderful read.

This was a fascinating memoir to read. Linda drops so many names of famous musicians that one gets to hear a little about them as well. (I've been a Neil Young fan, and really enjoyed hearing about him). It was nice to hear of her childhood, and her relationship with her father. This led me to look up her extensive albums of songs from mexico, learned from her dad. I love them - it's amazing that I never heard more of them. I was a bit disappointed that she didn't reveal anything about how she is coping with Parkinson's disease, but then, Linda Ronstadt has always seemed a private person. I recommend this memoir (and if you're 62 yrs like me, the large print edition keeps visual issues from interfering with enjoying reading).

Though I absolutely love the music of Linda Ronstadt (what a powerful and versatile voice), her book depicts her life in a very sterile fashion. She starts out with a wonderful account of her childhood, but once in California, the book becomes a list of musical talent she met and worked with during her career. I would have liked to have been offered what motivated her in the directions she took in life or her personal perspective on things, rather than a list of names. Though I believe she is one of the most talented female singers of all time, I wasn't impressed with the book. Watching an interview of her presenting her book, she seems like a sweet, interesting down-to-earth person. I wish I could have been offered that side of her in this book...
