Another wonderful regency romance by Emma Linfield! I read late into the night to finish this book, I had to know who The Enemy was!
The orphanage set up is good and sets the background for our reluctantly promoted governess. The description of the trip from the orphanage to Breckenridge Estate through London is exquisite. The plot does not lag. Lucretia Brent helps wholeheartedly with her pupil, Henrietta, sister to Sampson, Duke of Breckenridge and breeder of fine horses. Miss Brent goes beyond her duties becoming Luce to her employer and taking part in the ducal advisors along with James and Kelley. Luce takes a bullet meant for Henrietta and finds a poison needle trap in the garden. Sampson, the duke, is no slouch. He relocates the horses to the old castle ahead of the thief. He finds the poison, and Luce finds the antidote while Dr. Kirkwood supervises the treatment. There is a final dramatic confrontation. The epilogues tie up the loose ends.
A very well written story with a nice storyline and plot. I liked the mix of mystery, drama, action, romance, heartwarm, sweetness, protectiveness, emotions and twists. Absolutely likeable characters who are well defined and described. They develop nicely through the story. A story that flows well of the pages.It is an entertaining and captivating read. It caught me right from the beginning because of the reader is thrown right into the drama. A story that was writing in a style that kept me on the edge just wanting to know what happened next. Amazing use of words.I liked it a lot and can only recommend it to others who likes to read a romance with a mystery mixed in.
Wow! Emma Linfield's books just keep getting better and better!!!! This story, and I have read all of her books, is my favorite!I really don't like to talk about the actual stories when I do a review because I don't want to give anything away, plus there's always a description of the book's story before you even purchase the book, so why write about again???? So... I will say that this story is a Clean romance that is believable in the way that it evolved, deep and abiding friendships between some of the characters were extremely touching, the loyalties of the servants was heartwarming, the excitement of wondering when the next calamity was going to occur... and when would the betrayer's identity come to light- all these things, and so much more, made for a thoroughly enjoyable read!!!! Well done!!!!!!

Once I got started I could not put this story down. The main characters were well drawn and the plot left never a dull moment. The Governess was a strong young woman, but humble and likeable. The Duke was dominant in personality, but also caring.
This book had mystery and plot twists and turns, with a little love added. The characters were well developed and the story was easy to follow and kept your attention. Keep up the writing.
