I've been a solitary wiitch for over 40 years, and I've finally found a comprehensive book of oil recipes! What a relief. For all you newbies and to anyone who is contemplating making your own anointing oils, this book is the one you want to get, along with any Scott Cunningham book on the subject, and the Llewellen book on correspondences. The only thing I would say is to make sure you are using essential oils, NOT synthetic ones. Synthetic oils are a waste of time, money and effort. As for the complaint that the oil and potion recipes in this book are a mish-mash of recipes from different sources, so what? Most of the recipes for oils and potions have been taken from other sources (i.e., the internet, other books, etc.) I seriously doubt there are too many truly absolutely "authentic" recipes out there for oils or potions, and it's hard to show a legitimate provenance for any that are claimed to be "authentic". There are many recipes over the centuries that have been changed depending on what kind of herbs/roots/spices, etc. could be had by the person making them. Just like a cookbook. If you can't get Bayberry (which you may not be able to get/afford), go with pine. Remember, that everything has a light and a dark, and an herb/spice/root/nut, etc that is usually destined for a good purpose can be included in a negative potion as well. That is up to the person making the oil - nothing is EVER written in cement. Making your own oils is awesome, and much better than buying them.
I'm really disappointed on this book. Most recipes are described with very rare and very expensive , foreign , or synthetic blends.My grandmothers were always using local and available herbs for healing and magic , which didn't make it less powerful. I was hoping to find more locally adjusted to regions , where herbal Spirits connected to each other growing in same environment and in created relationship type of recipes and magical formulas . There is almost none without herbs almost impossible to get in natural form. There is nothing about infused oils, how to make magical infused oils. I gather herbs and other plants parts year around and have some recipes left from my grandmothers. I was hopping to find native recipes, used old days by Witches locally and herb "talking to each other" in formulas.
I am going to give this a review based on the formularies alone. This is a great foundational book to use to get and be creative with your own magickal oils. Now I see some people havd ranked this book pretty poorly. I must admit I was apprehensive and abhorred the ideal of using synthetic or fragrance oils for any of my conjuring oils. But what you must understand INTENTION will always charge the object. For instance, I can make a pendulum out of anything, such as string and a piece of wood chip. It’s just simple, yet it is your belief that will make it work. If you believe that the conjure oils made of synthetic oils will channel kali, abundance, love, etc., IT WILL WORK. So honestly the main thing I would worry about is the formulary and whether it would irriate the skin. In traditional Hoodoo traditions slaves had “used what they had†to make things work. That is what a true master does: making something out of nothing. Law of manifestation folks. Great book, as long as you look at it with an open mind.
I have to say this book surprised me. I give it four stars for the compilation of all the oils, I don't have to look around for recipes because there in one place now. Two types of oils I know appear twice so I took off a star but then added another for the info on oils in the back of the book. Not only did this book give lots of recipes but it gave info that inspired me to create my own oils, oils I couldn't find in this book. I love when a book can inspire me, my creativity. There are several oils on basics like Health, Money, Love, Banishing, etc. but what really surprised me were the oils on Chakra balancing and the addition of carrier/base oils and there magickal properties as well. All in all I do love this book and will definitely refer back to it. Lots of info I didn't know but searched for and now I have it. Thanks for a book I really needed.
This book is packed with information and recipes for mixing oils!The recipes are easy to follow and provides a lot of informationAbout oils and plants! I'm so glad I have this book for my collection.I would recommend getting this book for anyone's Magical library!

On the plus side, there are a LOT of recipes. However so many of the ratios given do not add up to 100%, so the recipe is basically useless. Many of the recipes call for Fragrance oils, not essentials and often the essentials recommended are not for use on human skin. I frankly expected better from Llewellyn.I don't agree with the correspondences the Author uses for most of her recipes. All in all I'd advise the serious oil blender, or the novice to stick to Scott Cunningham.
I love almost everything about this book. It's very comprehensive, and the sheer number of recipes is impressive. The problem is that the author uses fractional parts instead of whole parts, but many of the recipes don't add up to 1. For example, Amore Oil calls for 1/2 part Apple Blossom, 1/8 part Ambergris, and 1/8 Part Cinnamon. 1/2 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 3/4. So, what do I use for the missing 1/4 part of the recipe? There's another recipe that adds up to 1 1/2. How am I supposed to make 150% of a recipe? It's very frustrating.
