“The English Assassin” is the second novel in the series by Daniel Silva that follows the adventures of ex Israeli agent (and art restorer) Gabriel Allon. This text has given me no reason to stop reading the series.I am sure the series is a bit formulaic, it is becoming obvious even in book # 2 (there are 17 books in this series as of today) but that is to be expected with the genre. And I could do without the hero having a fling with the femme fatale of the piece, but the stories are intriguing and Silva is a good storyteller and writer, unlike many who write in this genre. This book focuses on the Swiss looting of art treasures and collaboration with the Nazis during WW II. This is not speculative, it happened. Mr. Silva interweaves this historical travesty within an interesting caper that also gives the reader a lot of details about music, especially classical violin pieces and mid twentieth century art and its place in the World War. You actually learn some things in this text.I was impressed with how skillfully and convincingly Silva gets in the mind of a great musician while they are playing. It is some of the best writing in the book when he puts us in the head of a virtuoso violinist as she wrestles with the music in private practice sessions. He has also created an interesting character (the assassin of the title) who is a secondary character in the book but an intriguing one. I hope we see more of him in the series.I see book # 3 in my near future.

My review may be somewhat biased as I have read several of the Silva Gabriel Allon series and really enjoy Silva's writing: his pacing, character development and details are so excellent. I have traveled to most of the locations described in this (and his other) book(s) and felt as if I were back there on the streets and cities he described. Allon is, to me, an enthralling character despite his abilities which sometimes seems superhuman. He speaks at least 5 languages and can change the dialect (e.g. German with a Berlin accent) for many of them, can memorize faces, facts and numbers to an extent that almost defies a reader's imagination and of course is one of the world's greatest fine arts restoration experts. He also takes physical and psychological punishment without any apparent permanent and yet, I really want to believe he, or someone like him, exists. I ordinarily get somewhat bored reading a series book because they either tend to get very predictable or the quality of writing deteriorates. I don't feel as if this is the case in this series which, by the way, does not have to be read in sequence. Each is a stand alone story with some minor details which change (Gabriels' marital status and his place in the agency come to mind) Maybe only a masterpiece such as To Kill a Mockingbird or The Goldfinch rates 5 stars but I really love Silva's writing, thus the 5 stars.

Since I had just finished a novel that I thought ran wild with characters running amok throughout, it was a relief to read Silva's very clear writing style. Unfortunately, for me, I found that some chapters were wonderfully clear and direct while others just didn't capture my attention and I found myself drifting. Having traveled through most of the geographic areas described I enjoyed Silva's treatment of them and picking up on the culture of each. I had no idea of this episode in Swiss history. I had been raised and believed that they were totally neutral so haggling of the wealth of stolen art and wanting it kept in the country was enlightening. Having just seen the movie "Woman of Gold" it made it all the more believable. Silva is a great story teller and some chapters kept me on the edge of my seat.

The English Assassin is much more than the average espionage thriller. In Gabriel Allon, Daniel Silva has constructed a fast-paed, action-filled plot that draws on an intriguing historical perspective that involves the Swiss/Nazi collusion to steal and hide priceless masterpieces taken from Jewish citizens during WWII.I found that I could not put the book down; the well-developed characters, compelling plot and surprising conclusion left me feeling a very satisfied and wanting to read more about Allon and the secondary characters, Ari Shamron and Julian Isherwood, and Eli Lavon. I hope future book will feature the larger than life figure of Ari Shamron. I certainly plan to continue with these characters and I hope the successive books are as good as this one.

This novel starts off with Mrs. Marguerite Rolfe digging in her garden. She is actually digging her own grave because of secrets she'd found hidden in her husband's study. She lies down, picks up her husband's shotgun, puts the barrel in her mouth and pulls the trigger. Thus begins a novel filled with intrigue, danger, murder, double cross and romance. With a destroyed suicide note. With two assassins, Gabriel Allon and "The Englishman".A lovely artist who falls in love with Gabriel.A Murder in Munich.A secret list of art treasures stolen from Jews.An ultra-secret group that buys these treasures. Were it not for continuing, boring distractions where meaningless, boring facts required much skimming, I would have rated this novel higher. I still believe "The English Assassin" to be a very good read, and recommend it highly.

Silva is very familiar with the UK and Europe. His descriptions of the Euro countries makes the reader feel like he/she has an inside understanding of the culture and social structures of the various countries described in the book. For instance, I believe that Silva's representations of Switzerland are very accurate. The hero, Gabriel Allon, is just as strong mentally as he is physically and even though he has the unenviable métier of assassin, he is a person with moral standards. A person who will (and can) do what needs to be done to overcome the malevolence of others. Greed is the driving force behind this tome and Allon is one of the people who can restore some semblance of propriety to the victims of WW II.
