Cross Breed is book/story 32 in the Breeds series. It features the long awaited story of Cassandra Sinclair and the mysterious coyote Breed, Dog. Readers who follow the series have watched Cassie grow up since she was first introduced in Elizabeth's Wolf and many speculated on who her mate would be. Lora Leigh did a wonderful job keeping the identity of her mate under wraps, although many readers had a strong suspicion it would be the supposed evil Council coyote agent (who turned out not to be so evil after all.) The story revealed many secrets that have been ongoing in the series, such as who Cassie's fairy/spirit guide is, and what type of Breed she is. I enjoyed the twist to Cassie's nature, and the fact that she is a truly strong Breed female who can give the males a run for their money. That being said, I was disappointed once again in how the relationship was handled rather than developed.I have read this series starting at book one, and my issue with the series remains the same. The series has a lot going for it: action, interesting plot, great characters, and explosive relationships. However, I am always disappointed in the author's use of mating heat. Mating heat, for those of you who have not read the series, is the phenomenon that happens when a Breed exchanges any type of bodily fluid with his/her mate. It begins a hormonal process that basically forces a couple to consummate their relationship, regardless of whether or not they are actually at that point in their relationship. The couple may not even like each other at the time. They may downright hate each other. It does not matter, mating heat forces the physical relationship. In theory mating heat is supposed to force destined mates to have to deal with each other, preventing them from walking away. In reality, it results in a lot of angry, frustrating physical activity that has nothing to do with love or romance at all. After a while, it comes across as lazy writing. Instead of the author finding a way for these destined mates to get to the point in their relationship where the passion of a mating heat would be an enhancement to the story, she throws in mating heat from the beginning, robbing the reader of the character and relationship development they could have. Yes, there are lots of scorching scenes, but they become repetitive after a while and are not quite satisfying because the characters lack the emotional connection. In some cases, the whole thing seems coerced rather than welcomed. To be fair, by the end of the book Ms. Leigh manages to get some story in between the bedroom scenes to the point where the characters get a happily ever after. For me, however, it is never good enough. The males tend to get away with actions that had the female not been in heat, they would have had to atone for instead of being let off the hook because she needs to breed or else suffer physical pain.As always, I am on the fence about whether or not I will get the next book in the series. I like the characters, but if the mates are once again forced to be together by mating heat when the female obviously does not want to be with the male (for good reason I might add) and the male once again gets away with actions that he should not get away with, I will be back to disliking the whole story. It would be nice if the author finally allowed the "cure" for mating heat to be found. Mating heat does not need to go away entirely, but just find a way to truly get it under control so it is not the same plot device used in every story. Then we could see a more satisfying storyline, with a relationship built on something other than a biological imperative with no real emotional tie. I really hope this happens before the Coyote females get their books. I would like for them to have better storylines than what we have had so far when it comes to relationship development. All in all, Cross Breed is a solid installment in the Breed series. It is probably one of the better books. If you are new to the series this is not the place to start. If you follow the series, you will want to read it. I gave it a 3 star rating, although it is probably a 3.5. The reason is that while the story is good, the mating heat plot device has been overused and is really not a substitute for developing the relationships through good writing. At this point in the series, I would have liked to see them move past this.
4.5 stars. May contain spoilers...just FYI.So glad to finally have Cassie's book and it was so worth it! Ahhh, I loved and (suspected) who her mate was. He's almost Jonas's equal. Mysterious, lethal, hardcore Alpha. Just under a more devil-may-care exterior. And since he's our beloved Cassie's mate, I was expecting top level ferocity and possessiveness from him. And he didn't disappoint on that end. Definitely a worthy Hero for Cassie. Only thing. I just didn't care for what he pulled near the end. It gutted Cassie and I honestly thought she would make him worked for it a bit longer. But I suppose, he had a good reason. I never doubted his love or loyalty to her. I just hated to see Cassie in pain and agony. This book kept me riveted to the damn near end. Could be the crazy anticipation. And finally getting closure on one of my favorite character. Whatever it was--I was glued to the pages...savoring every word. It had me guessing where it's heading. Who's really the villain, who's the pawn, what's their endgame. I also wanted more scenes of Dane. Man, that man is so enigmatic and intriguing. I can't wait to read his book and find out who his mate is. As for Cassie. Her character really surprised me. I had a feeling she was something different, powerful altogether but wow*********spoiler**********a female Primal? That's so impressive and unheard of until now. Kudos to Lora Leigh. She sure knows how to draw you in and keep you interested. The epilogue? Hell. Maybe my memory has waned. Or I blocked out the unpleasant storyline. Lobo and Khi. They're mates but Lobo was her step-father? How do you reconciled the fact that her true mate... married her evil mother. Isn't that a betrayal, especially if he's well aware. I don't really care if it's under whatever guise or marriage of convenience.. He didn't protect Khi from her abuse. Poor girl even walked in on them having sex...ugh sickening. To quote princess Eleanor..."Mother's vag---?? Dealbreaker!!!" Not so excited and sure if I want to read their book now.
Cassie Sinclair is suffocating. She's lived every day of her young life under tight Breed security. The only time that she's able to breathe is when she feels his presence. He's a mystery that she desperately wants to solve. Years of cryptic messages and phone calls could never have prepared her to meet him face to face. Because not only is he the most lethal Breed she has ever met, he is also her mate.Dog is known as the Council Coyote. He’s dangerous, deceptive and deadly. And he’s also the mate to the Breed’s beloved Princess. He’s waited for years in the shadows to finally claim her as his own. Despite the outrage from the Bureau, he’s never going to let them steal her away. He just needs a little more time before he can reveal who he truly is. If he can only keep her safe until then. She’s the only one who understands his fight to control the animal that he keeps hidden - because she has one of her own.So when fate forces him to choose – Will it be the freedom that he’s fought so hard for or the woman who possesses the other half of his soul?Cross Breed is the story that Lora Leigh's fans have been waiting for and she masterfully delivers it with a sensual onslaught to the senses! But don’t be fooled. Cassie and Dog’s story is as much a thriller as it a blazing love story. Page after page moves you ever closer to an edge that promises both joy and pain. And it will leave you absolutely breathless for more…
