Dee Dee Ngozi, 55, Atlanta, GA, 2016 My middle name is Ngozi, which means God’s blessing. I was speaking on HIV and my journey with HIV in the church one night and this African minister just jumped up and said “You’re Ngozi!” I said, “Uh, what do that mean?” and he said “It means God’s blessing. You have God’s blessing.” So I adopted that name when I sent my name change in and then I had my last name changed to my husband’s and then we was married. I served collard greens, and ham hock, and baked cakes and he’s just as happy as a lark after the twenty-five years we’ve been together. This coming into my real, real fullness of knowing why I was different is because I was expressing my spirit to this world. And I didn’t know how God felt about it but I believe in God and I have a deep spiritual background and I talk with the Holy Spirit constantly who’s taken me from the Lower West Side doing sex work to being at the White House. I read about this book when select photographs from it went viral on social media, the exquisite images within the hardbound coffee table book only tell part of the story. It is essential reading for anyone who is transgender, gender non conforming, knows or loves someone who is, or is just a compassionate and enlightened person who is interested in stories about the human spirit. While the media remains youth obsessed, and trans media stories often oooh and aaah about passability, most of the subjects here are seniors, and few have the passability of Janet Mock or Laverne Cox. These are people who struggled with their truths long before Time magazine declared the transgender tipping point. People who are finding their way into their authenticity, proudly wearing the grey hairs, wrinkles, and other signs of their long and traveled lives. Dignified, regal, and beautiful, always; sometimes glamorous; but this is not a book of boudoir shots -- its a celebration of trans reality. While I'm primarily interested in the stories of trans women, to find similarities, differences, inspiration and wisdom as it parallels my family experience, the stories of trans men help me better understand their lives as well. Every person, every story, every history matters. These are just a few.

I like everything about this book. My spouse, The Reverend Dr. David Weekley, is page 72😍This is a powerful book, giving dignity to a severely marginalized population of human beings. The photographs are wonderful and each persons story so unique. Jess and Vanessa did a wonderful job in their interviews, of drawing out each persons authenticity and life journey. It is an excellent educational tool for persons unfamiliar with transgender issues. And an encouraging one for younger Transgender people. Strength and hope abound in this work. Thankyou Jess and Vanessa😍😍😍😘

The title alone cannot convey the importance of this new book. It is both a work of art,and a work of literary accomplishment. It should belong in the libraries of all colleges and graduate schools which support LGBTQ+ curricula, as well as libraries supporting undergraduate and graduate schools of art , photography, design & related fields.Kudos to Jess Dugan and Vanessa Fabbre!Bill Cohen, Publisher & Editor-in-ChiefHarrington Park Press

I heard about this book on NPR one day when the hosts were interviewing the author. I have a Transgender son and thought it might be a nice Christmas gift. This book is so beautiful. The stories, and the photographs are inspiring; touching; sad; I experienced a whole range of emotions reading about the lives of people who are true trailblazers for others who will follow.I can not wait to give this to my son on Christmas morning. I’m so grateful to all the people who shared their stories and have helped, in their own way to make my own sons journey a little easier.

We bough this book and are keeping it on our kitchen table and we read about a person or 2 each night at dinner. The book is very enlightening and inspiring and well done.

This is an awesome, ground breaking book about transgender and gender non-conforming people over the age of 50 and their stories. I should know, I’m in it.

Great Coffee Table Book
