I really like the story. I would like the author to know that I would be happy to proof read his books. There are really a lot of typo mistakes. Sometimes the characters are mixed up (Example: "Bob untied the ropes on Bob's hands. Then, Bob locked Bob up in the jail cell".). Normally I refuse to keep reading a story with so many mistakes. This story is really good, so I keep reading. Sometimes a person shows up in the story who has never been mentioned. He is talking about the same person, but gave them another name temporarily.

This novel is one in a series of great Westerns by C.J. Petit that now includes 50 books. I’ve read every single one and enjoyed almost every word. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m addicted, but I am rather ashamed that I just now got around to writing some reviews of his work. These books have common elements that you don’t find in many places these days – a hero who is a really good man with some special skills and good morals – a knowledge of Old West firearms – acknowledgement of the role of money in one’s life – a respect for women and the difficulties they faced in the latter half of the 19th century. With one exception that I can recall, each novel introduces a new hero and they are long enough that there is plenty of time to develop the character and bring the story to a satisfying close. You could say that Petit writes according to a formula, but I think he has developed a palette of ideas that he can choose from for each novel. No two are alike, even though they all incorporate his basic principles. It’s been fun to see his writing change subtly as he seeks the best balance of story elements: action, character development, romance, etc…This collection of Western novels is an incredible feat of writing skill and persistence. I can only compare Petit to Louis L’Amour, which for any fan of Westerns may seem like a stretch, but not by much.CJ says he is going to take a bit of a break after writing his 50th novel, “Retribution.” Fortunately, there are so many CJ Petit novels that I can go back and re-read the earlier ones that I’ve forgotten. If you like Old West fiction, you really need to try some of these novels!

Extremely poor editing and not because of converting to the Kinkle format. By far to much repetition and detail. I'm very sorry I purchased this book, but will definitely remember not to purchase anymore from same author. Nothing spell-binding or informative here for certain. Very. very disappointing.

Trying to decide on 2 or 3 stars because there are too many errors ( needs a lot of editing). Also, the main character & hero named Hugh could not ever exist in real life. He is always stating, "I never lie" which he never does. Although this story is dated in early pioneer days the hero is so wealthy that he will give a woman $80 to buy herself clothing because she is in need. Actually, most of the ladies usually own two or three dresses. Often times this may be someone he has just recently met. He buys homes & a restaurant for some ladies because he is nice & believe they deserve these things. It is also unbelievable that children in this story experience their mother being murdered & within days express a desire for a new mother & call her mama immediately.

I liked this book so much, I got 3 more that he wrote. Enjoyed them!

Baker City was the very worst C.J. Petit story yet. The leading man is always the same sappy guy in all his novels as anyone who has read two or more of them know. He is Phil Donahue and Matt Dillon rolled into one super sensitive butt kicking dude. This one surpassed the others in terms of sappiness with 2 women adoring Hugh and both ultimately marrying him. The first one begged the second one to love Hugh as she had with her dying breathe. The new wife helps to kill off Hugh's sick father in an act of mercy that everyone just gushes over. To be honest, some of the authors story lines are ok. It's just the same character in every book that creepily has every woman within a hundred miles swooning over him. He just changes the names. At least the books are a bargain if you don't mind the romance novel hero.

This was the craziest book I ever read !!Yes I read it because I couldn't believe the stupid text !!I thought it had to get better , but you know it never did!!The story idea was sweet, but the dialogue killed it !!If you want to read a book that shows you how not to write read this one !! Sorry 😐

I have been reading books for 36 years, this book so unrealistic to be acceptable. Hugh is beyond perfect giving money to every lost soul. The author has a fixation with women being raped and Hugh being the hero saving them.Really!!!! Who kills off the main heroine 3/4's thorough the book? Then Hugh who LOVED Rebecca marries Susan four days after Rebecca's death. The children who dearly loved their mother accepts Susan as their new Mama like Rebecca didn't exist. Out out sight, out of mind... Again not realistic especially with young children. Some of the wording wasn't correct for the year. I'll never purchase another book by this author.
