If you have a large head, 7 3/8 or larger, this may not be for your. Go and try it on in the store. I have a 7 5/8 head and it barely fits. Be warned.

My 9-year-old loves to dive into stories, either reading on his own, reading to me, or having me read to him. And as the son of a nature educator, he loves to read about the outdoors and to contemplate his own next adventures on the trails. The author's description of being in an avalanche is very well written, and had my son on a brief white knuckle adventure as I read. We're just south of Boston, in a lowland area along the coast. Avalanches are not our thing. He's lived through a few tropical storms and nor'easters, but had no concept of what to do in case of an avalanche. While the story is a narrative tale, it's also laden with many facts about how to survive such a disaster, from the tools that one should carry to the nature-inspired designs one can utilize (snow caves, snow shoes, etc.) to both survive and try to make contact with would-be rescuers. I don't believe an avalanche is in our near future, but if we do bump into one, hopefully a few thoughts will come back to both me and my son.The back of the book contains sections on what to do if encountered by a bear (as the main characters in the books are) - both black and grizzly - and useful websites to check out for safety ideas. We'll be checking out the author's other existing and upcoming titles to see what else she has to offer.

Avalanche! is an exciting, thrilling book that children are going to love. Even better, they will learn some great survival tips from this book. I (an adult) read this book in one sitting. The actual story is a little over 80 pages. It is a short read. However, in the short book you will find lots of excitement and adventure. I literally could not put it down. It is about a young pair of twins that are exploring a mountainside when many things happen (including of course, an avalanche). There is an underlying realization that the female twin has when her brothers life is in jeopardy that is an important message too. After the story is over, the fun continues. There are pages of survival tips. They include how to survive many things that the twins encounter in their wilderness adventure (including animal attacks). This is followed by the first chapter of the next book in the series. The message is great in this book, children will be able to relate to the main characters, and there is an educational value too. I highly recommend this book.

Avalanche! Is the second book in the Survivor Diaries series and is just as good as the first. Ashley and Ryan are twins who are enjoying a skiing outing with their parents when the youngsters decide to go off on a side trip to follow some wolverine tracks. The worst happens and the two are caught in an avalanche. Both manage to live through the ordeal but now they are alone, cold, hungry and on their own. Ryan has always been the alpha twin but in this situation he’s received a blow to the head and has lost his memory. It’s now up to Ashley to get the two of them through the cold night and keep the two alive until help arrives. These books not only tell an exciting story of survival but has advice about real world situations telling the readers how to endure if they ever find themselves in peril. In this book you’ll learn about ski safety as well as what to do in bear attacks – both brown and grizzly. Your 7 to 10 year olds will love this exciting series.

Avalanche! (Survivor Diaries)Such a wonderful read.Keeps and hold your interest right from the start. This author really does her research on these stories.I would love to see this author do more books like these.Great story about a twins and how they made it through the unimaginable. They not only had to rely on what they had learned in life but more so had to rely on each other. This is perfect for a reluctant reader or those just starting out with chapter books. It is filled with adventure without being scary. Has just enough suspense to keep the reader going. Can really open up for so much further discussion from the information after the story is over.Includes bonus facts and information about things in the story.

This was a compelling read for my 4th grade classroom. It had a quick moving, exciting plot that kept the pages turning. The characters are believable kids who must find a way to survive an avalanche. Woven into the storyline is smart problem-solving skills. I loved that is showed a smart female character who didn't fall back to having to be beautiful as part of her description. As a teacher I have students now clamoring for more of the upcoming series. With only one other book available, I look forward to the new ones coming out. I wish I could have a class set as it is a perfect mixture of realistic fiction with non-fiction references at the end of the book. Terry Lynn Johnson, please keep adding to this series!

This is a really good story about surviving unexpected circumstances. It's the second in the series and I didn't read the first, but this book stood on its own just fine. In this story, two young skiers are hit by an avalanche and they use their wits to get through it. They survive injury, cold, hunger, and a bear to be reunited with their parents. This book reminds me a lot of the I Survived series that my kids have enjoyed reading. While those books are based on real life disasters, this story is also about something that could really happen. It's an interesting story and offers vital information that could be used if one ever found himself caught in an avalanche. The end of the book also has some other helpful tips to survive in the cold wilderness. My kids read and enjoyed this book. It's recommended for ages 7 to 10 and is good for anyone comfortable with short chapter books. It's interesting for anyone older too. I'd love to read the first one and I look forward to future releases.
