I stumbled across this gem while preparing to visit Paris again, a city I have loved for almost 40 years. The author, David Downie, is an American who has lived in Paris since 1986. He loves Paris deeply and knows it far better than I do.Downie likes to walk. His book is divided into Paris People, Paris Places and Paris Phenomena. It is the places that interested me the most. For example, Downie describes a long walk along the Seine that I decided to replicate. It transformed my view of Paris because I learned how much of the city revolves around the river. I also learned just how small the city is geographically and how it seems that almost every centimeter of the city has been lovingly cultivated. It was unclear to me from reading the book where the walk ended so I emailed the author who cheerfully responded with the details and even suggested a nice, reasonably priced restaurant for lunch right along the walk. I watched the city transform from stark, modern suburbs not too far inside Paris's Périphérique eventually past Notre Dame and on to its terminus at the Pont Mirabeau. I will never forget Le Pont Mirabeau after reading Guillaume Apollinaire's poem in high school breathing life and love into the bridge. Seeing Le Pont Mirabeau at the end of this day-long walk was special. The entire walk was about 10 km or 6.2 miles. The transformations within that short distance speak volumes about Paris. At Downie's suggestion, I also visited Buttes-Chaumont park which is even more impressive than Mr. Downie describes. He knows Place des Voges like the back of his hand so that chapter is exceptional. On top of the wonderful details that make Paris come to life, Downie's prose shows a love and mastery of the English language that I appreciate. This book will teach you so much about Paris and make you want to return again and again or just to go to Paris and remain as Downie has.
We thought we knew Paris fairly well, having been there some 8-9 times. But this book reveals a trove of both light and serious information that travel guides omit.. My favourite is the author's trek across the city as he follows the streets that were once the main roads of the Romans. It is something we plan to do. David Downie ranges far and wide in his choice of topics, whether it's about Coco Channel or the gruesome aspects of the Seine. The variety is endless. What is smart about this read is that it will interest both those who are familiar with the city and those who are just getting to know it. Downie bores deep in chosen parts of its history (who knew about the politics behind a certain subway station? or the palace intrigues of the Marais' Place des Voges some 300 years ago? ) A thoroughly entertaining and informative read!
This particular book is one of the most informative, enjoyable; yet, historically blended tomes that we have found so far on the background of Paris' many, many secreted corners. It was truly a gem of information considering it's small size. It is a very surprising book and we shall never be without it. Each chapter is full of the type of interesting facts & details which are written authoritatively and with a deep sense of love for Paris. (And those who love Paris will highly regard this book!) The specific "nuggets" of information found within specifically explain both past & present of certain "out-of-the-way" places all true Francophiles visiting Paris love so much. These are detailed with such clarity, there is no doubt you will read it from cover to cover! Just like us, you will most assuredly take this book with you on your next trip to Paris. (Due to some unique areas outlined inside these pages, we will be seeking out many more of the little niches during our next trip.) you will too!
There were some good suggestions of places to visit that are off the beaten track. Sometimes I was irritated by the author's style which is glib, overwritten, and sometimes sarcastic. It's obvious that the essays were published first elsewhere because the same information is repeated, sometimes two or three times. There are two essays on Pere Lachaise cemetary - one would have been enough, and an essay on cobblestones wasn't that exciting. A few, where the writing was toned down, were very good (IMO).
This is the best book about Paris that one could hope to read. It does not concern itself with the "big" sights or the usual ways that visitors look at the city. Instead, it covers areas that are plainly visible but so often unseen, the working heart of the city. A good example is the chapter on the river people who operate the traffic on the Seine. Another is the Les Halle area, something that for centuries was vital to the city and then was changed in a way whose benefit is questionable to say the least. For anyone who loves Paris, this is a truly useful book.
A lovely little collection of essays on different aspects of my adopted city. I pick up the book and choose one; kind of like choosing from a box of chocolates. Last night before sleeping, I spent a day in Luxembourg Gardens, spying on some interesting little vingettes. David Downie is such a good writer and shares his intimacy with beautiful Paris so eloquently. I highly recommend this to anyone who shares my love for Paris.
